The aim of the project is to study a method called marine cloud brightening (MCB), which uses fine particles of sea salt to increase the reflectivity of clouds and potentially cool the planet. Sea salt particles, about 1/1000 the width of a human hair, are designed to stay airborne, increasing the number of cloud droplets and reflecting more sunlight to lower surface temperatures.
City officials paused the experiment to conduct an independent assessment of the health and environmental safety of the aerosol spray used. The University of Washington said it is awaiting regulatory review through its Coastal Aerosol Research and Engagement (CAARE) initiative.
