The 23-year-old visual artist, whose name is Kawara Welch, was arrested earlier this month for stalking a doctor for five years. The persecution began in 2019 in Ituiutaba (MG) with messages, phone calls and even on the street. The victim could not be identified for privacy reasons.

The case was revealed last Sunday (19) in a report by Fantástico on Globo TV. According to the program, the doctor met Kawara during a consultation in 2018, when he said he was suffering from depression. After the third appointment, he saw the doctor at another clinic where he worked.

Kawara then discovered the professional’s cell phone number and began sending dozens of messages and making dozens of calls. The young woman sent more than 1,300 messages and made more than 500 calls in just one day.

According to the doctor’s statement, his call to his wife and son, who was 8 years old at the time, caused complete panic in the family, which felt constantly threatened.

Stalking: Became popular thanks to Netflix

Stalking is an English term that refers to a form of cruelty that goes far beyond simple everyday approaches. The practice was criminalized in Brazil in 2021, with a prison sentence of six months to two years.

The term has become popular recently due to the series baby reindeertelling the story Donny Dunn, the target of abuse and harassment. The production premiered on Netflix in April and consists of 7 episodes.

In the Brazilian case that occurred last weekend, Kawara even approached the doctor on the street, who ran in the wrong direction to lose the harasser. In 2022, he invaded the office where the victim was treating a patient and clashed with his wife.

Following

The following year, there was another attack at the same location, and Kawara suddenly took the mobile phone from the doctor’s wife. In March last year, the court decided to arrest him as a precautionary measure for stealing his mobile phone and again not complying with precautionary measures. Kawara had been on the run ever since, until he was arrested at the beginning of the month at a university in Uberlândia (MG), where he was studying nutrition.

Police are investigating how the follower managed to send messages from 2 thousand different mobile phone numbers. His deputy, Rafael Faria, even suspected that he was a hacker or had help from a hacker.

Kawara’s defense denied the accusations and said that she had a relationship with the doctor. The doctor’s attorney denies the relationship, and the police chief says there is no indication the victim and the stalker were in a relationship.

Stalker gained thousands of followers on social media

Kawara Welch’s case attracted attention and was widely discussed on social media earlier in the week. One of the most curious details was about the young woman’s Instagram profile.

He has an open page on the photography platform and has gained thousands of followers since last Sunday. According to X (formerly Twitter) users, Kawara had just over 2,000 followers on Instagram before the Fantástico report was completed.
