China is developing an artificial intelligence chatbot trained on President Xi Jinping’s philosophy. The “Chat Xi PT” project, as it has been informally nicknamed, is being promoted by the country’s Cyberspace Administration (CAC) as a “safe and reliable” artificial intelligence option for the Chinese public.
According to website Finance TimesThe new Chinese AI chatbot is trained based on a database fed with information from “Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.”
The philosophy is based on the dictator’s thoughts and contains instructions on all aspects of political, social and economic life, and has been the basis of China’s constitution since 2018.
Generative artificial intelligence used to control the internet
CAC considers Chat Xi PT to be safe and reliable because the tool is implemented only on servers in China using a local database. Additionally, the large language model (LLM) is not open source.
Regulation is also happening with other AI tools launched by companies in Chinese cyberspace. For example, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which launched in November 2022, is not available in the Asian country.
Chinese AI has not yet reached general use, and currently only invited people can try the tool. For now, the Chinese government’s official master’s program has basic features such as answering questions, drafting reports, summarizing information, and translating from Mandarin Chinese to English and Mandarin Chinese to English.
