While iMessage complies with DMA regulation, Apple argues that its “small scale compared to other messaging apps” and other factors exclude it from DMA rules. Despite pressure from Google and mobile operators, the EU ultimately sided with Apple.

Although the EU does not require iMessage to work with other messaging apps, Apple is promising to support the RCS standard starting this year, which will make messaging between iMessage and Android more secure and functional. However, RCS messages will remain in green bubbles, unlike blue iMessages.
