Joanna Stern of The Wall Street Journal today shared a new documentary on the evolution of the iPhone.

It includes an interview with Apple CMO Greg Joswiak. In one snippet, a journalist talks about how Samsung and brands introduced large displays into their smartphones years before the iPhone.

In response to a question about how the parties feel about such a decision by the participants, Joswiak replied:

They were annoying. They’re annoying because they stole our work. They took the innovations we made and made the most of the iPhone just by putting it on the screen. We are not very happy.

In 2011, Apple really believed that Samsung had stolen the design of the iPhone and was taking the company to court. When the 5-inch Galaxy S4 came out, the Cupertinos had a 4-inch iPhone 5, but then the iPhone 6/6 Plus came out with diagonals of 4.7 and 5.5 inches. At the same time, the device detection design was similar: round shapes, a display on most of the front panel and one button below the display.

Initially, Apple received about $1 billion in damages, but this amount decreased as the retrial proceeded. In 2018, Apple finally reached an agreement with Samsung and demanded a settlement.
