A new algorithm developed under the direction of Jakob Kestel-Hansen can automatically track and map protein clusters in microscopic images. Previously, this labor-intensive process took weeks and hindered research.

The algorithm does an excellent job of identifying protein clots down to one nanometer in size and classifying them by shape and size. This detailed analysis is very important because the shape of a protein can significantly affect how it functions in the body.

This discovery paves the way for a deeper understanding of protein aggregation, an important factor in dementia and other diseases.
