Researcher Bryce Bostwick has found a way to create custom animated app icons in iOS. For this, the official API from Apple is used.
Typically, the operating system requires the user to select a larger icon for the application and then display a notification confirming the change. This action is canceled if the system cannot verify that the user has selected a different icon or if the icon is not displayed. As a result, the application cannot independently change its icon in the background.
The developer was able to install custom icons without requiring user confirmation. He forced the system to change app verification so that iOS is always the active app, even when it’s running in the background.
This allows the app to automatically change its icon in the background whenever it wishes. To disable this feature, Bostwick highlighted several frames into animated icons.
Bostwick believes such an option could be allowed for all developers. This would be useful, for example, when the next event comes. [9to5]
