Various foods contain ellagic acid, such as raspberries, pomegranates, blackberries and walnuts. It is known for its antioxidant properties and also has anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic and anti-cancer effects.

The results of the new study were published in the journal Antioxidants.

There is evidence that ellagic acid exhibits synergistic therapeutic effects when combined with other antioxidant nutraceuticals. This makes it a potential candidate for use in combination therapy.

A previous study found that ellagic acid was best at reducing inflammation. A larger study is underway to determine at what stage of disease treatment it will not be effective in reversing liver damage.
