The black border was introduced in 2019 to support responsive icons that can dynamically change shape based on user settings. However, the media wrote that as responsive icons became less common, the border began to look “outdated and cumbersome”, especially on devices with round icon shapes.

The new update completely removes the border on devices with round icons, such as Pixel phones. Thus, the Spotify logo now covers the entire icon area, creating a more “uncluttered and visually appealing” appearance.

However, it should be noted that this change only applies to round icons. Devices such as Samsung Galaxy phones with different icon shapes will still have a black frame for compatibility.
