The gut microbiome is the community of microorganisms that live in the intestines. These substances play a critical role in controlling body weight and overall health.
In a small study, researchers compared the effects of two diets. 41 overweight or obese people participated in this experiment. One group followed a Mediterranean-style calorie-restricted diet, while the other followed intermittent fasting and a protein stimulation diet (IF-P diet).
The study found that people who ate both diets had greater gut microbiota diversity, reduced gastrointestinal symptoms, and greater reductions in visceral fat compared to the calorie-restricted group.
The IF-P diet was found to increase the abundance of certain gut microbes associated with a leaner body type and increased circulating protein and amino acid levels associated with weight loss and fat oxidation.
