Although mammography is effective in reducing breast cancer mortality, it also carries the risk of false-positive results. In recent years, scientists have been actively exploring the use of artificial intelligence systems to improve screening accuracy.

The study found that AI not only helps doctors detect more cases of cancer but also significantly reduces their workload. Previously, mammograms had to be double-checked to avoid missing a tumor. Now AI can only flag images with a low likelihood of cancer that need to be examined by a doctor.

The study involved two groups of women, ages 50 to 69, who had mammograms a year apart. In the first group, the images were checked by two doctors, in the second group, they were first analyzed by artificial intelligence, and then suspicious cases were examined by experts.

The use of AI showed that it allowed more tumors to be detected (0.82% vs. 0.70%) while reducing false positives (1.63% vs. 2.39%). At the same time, doctors’ workload decreased by a third.

Scientists say more research is needed to assess long-term outcomes and ensure there is no increase in overdiagnosis.
