The selected drilling area is at the center of a magnetic anomaly associated with a tectonic suture that emerged during the conjunction of Antarctica and India in the late Proterozoic. Experts managed to cross more than 550 meters of the ice sheet and extract samples from under the ice.

The resulting rock samples will be studied to understand the origin of the magnetic anomaly associated with the Earth’s geomagnetic field. The results of the study will also make it possible to reconstruct climate changes in Antarctica over the last 10 thousand years.
