French prosecutors found it in a complaint filed by Halte à l’Obsolescence Programmée (HOP) last December. Literally, its name translates as “Stop Planned Obsolescence”.

In its complaint, HOP accuses Apple of restricting repairs to its devices by linking parts serial numbers to the smartphone’s serial number. This allows the manufacturer to remotely “degrade the quality of the repaired smartphone.”

The organization also added that Apple’s self-repair program is bad for the environment because the company leads to big and severe illnesses.

In 2017, HOP filed a complaint against Apple for slowing down iPhones. This happened to the fact that in 2020 France fined Apple 25 million euros. [Barron’s]
