Ionospheric disturbances caused by irregularities in the Earth’s ionosphere can seriously affect global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals, leading to navigation errors. Expensive special receivers (ISMRs) are often used to detect such distortions. The new technique uses data on signal noise level and reception angle collected every second from conventional receivers.

A machine learning algorithm trained to recognize characteristic distortion patterns effectively filters them out, providing high accuracy in detecting real impairments. The accuracy of the new method reaches 99.9%, which is higher than traditional methods.

According to scientists, this method not only offers a cost-effective alternative to specialized equipment, but also increases the accuracy and reliability of space weather monitoring.
