A study conducted by Hiroshima University simulated online interviews to see how the direction of an interviewee’s gaze affects how a candidate is perceived by experts.

Twelve students served as interviewers and introduced themselves twice: once while looking directly at the webcam and once while looking at the screen. Evaluations of 38 full-time employees found that candidates who looked directly at the camera scored significantly higher on six criteria, including “social appeal, general work ability, determination, ability to collaborate, and overall attractiveness.”

Researchers Masahiro Shinya and Noriko Yamane emphasize the importance of maintaining webcam eye contact during online interviews to improve job application perception and advocate the development of guidelines to improve visual attention management in remote environments.
