Experts led by Christina S. Petersen of Texas Tech University in Lubbock discovered that when walnuts are added to a person’s diet, the composition of their gut bacteria, or microbiome, changes. In this case, the body’s production of the amino acid L-homoarginine increases. It is known that a deficiency of this element is associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease.

In other scientific articles, it is stated that walnuts can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Experts learned in a new study how walnuts benefit the gut and whether it has any positive effects. As a result, scientists discovered a mechanism by which walnuts reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The study also showed that people whose diets included walnuts had higher levels of Gordonibacter bacteria in their guts. This substance converts plant polyphenols ellagitannins and ellagic acid into metabolites, allowing them to be better absorbed. Additionally, participants who ate nuts showed higher expression of several genes involved in important metabolic and biosynthetic pathways.
