According to GSMArena, HarmonyOS Next is based on the OpenHarmony microkernel architecture. It is not tied to Android or Linux and uses its own HarmonyOS microkernel.
The operating system only supports native applications compiled with Ark Compiler and Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). That is, it will not be possible to run Android applications or APK files on it.

Externally HarmonyOS reportedly still looks and feels like a familiar mobile operating system, but behind the external facade is a completely new architecture. In addition, the platform will work not only on smartphones.
In the presentation, the company promises a 30% increase in productivity and a 20% reduction in energy consumption. According to GSMArena experts, these are very serious indicators, but it is not clear what Huawei compares these figures with.
One of the main advantages of the next generation operating system is a unified architecture that combines on-premises and cloud capabilities. Additionally, HarmonyOS has built-in AI features such as imaging, audio restoration, and assistance for people with speech and vision disabilities.
Furthermore, HuaweiOS promises to be a powerful multimedia system with support for Ark Multimedia Engine, Ark Graphics Engine and FFRT. The latest technology should enable ray tracing for gaming at least at the PC level.
