According to Izvestia, which read the document sent to the department, there is a problem of excessive sugar consumption among Russians. The document cites data from Rosstat, according to which the average Russian eats 30.2 kg of sugar per year, that is, about 83 g per day.
At the same time, Rospotrebnadzor recommends consuming no more than 50 grams per day. That is, added sugar should not represent more than 10% of the calories in a person’s entire daily diet.
Since 2020, the number of Russians suffering from obesity has continued to grow. If in 2020 there were 1,909,700 citizens with this diagnosis, in 2022 their number will increase to 2,178,600. The promoters of sugar labeling on products are convinced that it is the consumption of this component that contributes to the increase in the problem of obesity.
“Manufacturers successfully disguise sugar in products. Names like fructose, sucrose, dextrose, levulose and molasses also hide sugar. In addition, sometimes sugar is disguised with the words “syrup”, “nectar”, “manufactured”, etc.,” Izvestia quotes MP Chernyshov.
According to the initiative, the brands must be clearly visible. It must occupy at least 25% of the front of the package.
