The initiative includes a proof of concept that astronauts could use lunar regolith – the layer of rock and minerals on the lunar surface – to build lunar habitats. ESA scientists replicated this regolith by crushing the meteorite and creating a grey mixture into 3D-printed Lego bricks. These bricks function in the same way as their Earth-based counterparts and can be easily connected together.
“No one has ever built a structure on the Moon before, so it was great to try all kinds of design and construction techniques with our space bricks. “It was both fun and useful in terms of scientifically understanding the limits of these technologies,” said ESA scientist Aidan Cowley.
