Russians are increasingly trusting large organizations that process their personal data, and less and less trusting themselves. The most trusted operators, according to people, were state Internet services, banks and large online stores. These conclusions are based on a study conducted by the NAFI Analytical Center.
Russians’ trust in major online personal data operators has increased significantly over the past seven years. Both domestic and foreign markets showed particularly high growth rates. Banks maintain a consistently high level of confidence despite the slight increase. Mobile operators and electronic payment services lost their places in the trust rankings.
But increased trust also has a downside: More and more Russians are transferring responsibility for the security of their personal data to website owners, providers, services and the state. The proportion of those confident in their own abilities to ensure data security decreased from 44% in 2023 to 40% in 2024.
Timur Aimaletdinov, Deputy Director General of the NAFI Analytical Center, noted that protecting personal data remains one of the most difficult tasks for Russian companies. He stressed the importance of investing not only in technology and software, but also in training in digital skills, especially how to handle personal information.
This study was conducted in May 2024 by the NAFI Analytical Center among 1,600 Russians over the age of 18 across Russia.
