Researchers from Lanzhou University, the University of Copenhagen and other institutions have shed light on Denisovans’ adaptation to high altitude and variable climate conditions between 200,000 and 40,000 years ago by examining skeletal remains from the Baishiya karst cave.
The study has unearthed a new fossil of the Denisovans and also revealed their eating habits: They hunted and ate a variety of animals, including sheep and woolly rhinos.
Using innovative techniques such as Zooarchaeology with Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS), the researchers deciphered the origins of the bone fragments, highlighting that Denisovans made efficient use of available resources to survive and make tools.
