Apple has shared a new support document that explains how to protect your Apple ID from phishing, social engineering, scam calls, and more.
This is a large document that everyone is encouraged to read. We will only make the main selections from it.
Here are 8 tips from Apple to help make your Apple ID as secure as possible:
• Never share personal information or information and data, such as passwords or security codes, and never agree to enter them into any site that an unknown interlocutor sends you to
• Protect your Apple ID. Use two-factor authentication, always keep your contact information safe, and never share your Apple ID password or verification codes with anyone. Apple never asks for this information to provide support.
• Never use Apple Gift Cards to pay other people.
• Learn how to tell if emails from Apple about your App Store or iTunes Store purchases are genuine. When you send or receive money using Apple Cash (available in the US only), it’s a private transaction just like any other monetary exchange.
• Learn how to keep your Apple devices and data secure.
• Only download software from sources you can trust.
• Do not click on links, open or save attachments in suspicious or out-of-date messages.
• Do not respond to suspicious phone calls or messages claiming to be from Apple. Instead, contact Apple directly through official support channels.
How to report suspicious emails, messages and calls
If you receive a suspicious email that appears to be from Apple, go to the address [email protected]. If you receive a call from a suspicious number on FaceTime (for example, from someone who appears to be a bank or financial institution), send a screenshot of the call details to [email protected].
If you receive a suspicious FaceTime link in the Messages or Mail app, send a screenshot of the link to [email protected]The screenshot must be the phone number or email address from which the link was sent.
To send a suspicious SMS message using Apple, take a screenshot of it and send it to [email protected].
To report incoming messages as spam on iCloud.com, me.com, or mac.com, mark them as spam or move them to the iCloud Spam folder. Marking email messages as spam helps improve iCloud Mail’s filtering and reduce the number of similar messages you receive in the future.
To report harassment, identity theft, or other abuse that appears in your inbox on iCloud.com, me.com, or mac.com, go to [email protected].
To add information about an unwanted or suspicious message to the Messages app, tap the Report Spam button below it. You can also block individual messages and calls.
Report fraudulent phone calls to the Federal Trade Commission (U.S. only) at reportfraud.ftc.gov or your local law enforcement agency.
Apple also separately described on its website psychological attacks, phishing and other fraudulent actions that can evoke the emotions of the attacker. This and other information can be found on the official website.
