Japan is considered the cradle of technology, and China is the center of production. What about South Korea? There are many interesting things there in terms of technology and IT.
Today I have collected 10 of the most technologically advanced and famous brands from South Korea. There is a place for everyone, even video game publishers.
1. Crafton
Let’s talk about games. You may have heard of PUBG? This game is owned by the Korean company Krafton.
The company was founded in March 2007. Later, in June 2008, the North American branch of Bluehole Interactive was opened. And in August of the same year, Korea signed a publishing agreement for the game TERA with NHN Corporation. TERA is still alive and well.
Did you know that this game comes from South Korea?
In late July 2021, Krafton held the second-largest IPO in its country’s history ($3.8 billion in shares), with revenues of $1.57 billion. The company’s main revenue comes from the PUBG brand, but the publisher is also trying to enter the single-player market.
For example, in 2022, Krafton became the publisher of Callisto Protocol, a horror game from the creator of the Dead Space series.
2. Kia Motors Corporation
Next to Hyundai historically (and legally also the largest shareholders in 2022 were Hyundai Motor) there is always Kia Motors Corporation.
What’s interesting is that the company started out as a manufacturer of steel pipes and bicycle parts.
The K-Velos is the first bicycle created by Kia Motors under the leadership of chief designer Peter Schreyer.
Later they began to produce motorcycles, and in 1963 – the first cars, trucks from imported components. The company began to make its first passenger cars already in 1974.
Kia Motors Corporation is considered a pioneer in innovation in the field of self-driving systems and driver safety.
3. LG Electronics Inc.
A well-known South Korean company, which is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of consumer electronics and home appliances. There are a lot of directions: from home appliances to panels.
For the first time in a long time, our country has excellent TVs. At least every third person I know has an LG TV with an OLED display. The company is generally famous for its innovations in TV technology. For example, in 2004, LG introduced the largest TV in the world with a diagonal of 71 inches, and in 2019, they were among the first to show a TV with an 8K screen.
The largest TV in the world with a diagonal of 71 inches was made by LG in 2004.
Unfortunately, in other segments, the company is not doing so well. For example, in 2021, due to unprofitability, it had to leave the smartphone market.
But in the TV market, LG is still doing well in most countries.
4. LIG Nex1
The LIG Nex1 brand is part of the LG company and specializes in the creation of aerospace and defense equipment.
The company was founded in 1976 and has since become one of the leading suppliers of military electronics and security systems in South Korea. LIG Nex1 offers a wide range of products, including ammunition, fire control systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, space communication and navigation systems, and weapons.
LIG Nex1’s Multi-Purpose Vertical Take-off and Recovery Utility (MPUH) at the Asia Defense Exhibition in 2023.
In 2012, LIG Nex1 achieved a high level in the defense industry by introducing its own exclusive technologies into all defense systems used in South Korea.
5. The Satrek Initiative
Satrec Initiative is a company that designs and builds space systems. It also provides engineering services, testing and quality control.
The company was founded in 1999 by engineers who developed Korea’s first satellite, KITSAT-1, at KAIST’s Satellite Technology Research Center (SaTRec).
This is what the KITSAT-1 satellite looked like.
The Satrec Initiative is designing and building an Earth observation satellite called SpaceEye. It also provides various space components, including high-resolution optoelectronic payloads and star trackers.
In addition, South Korea has partnerships with various space agencies and companies around the world.
6. Sure
We mostly use Google or Yandex to search for information on the Internet. In South Korea, more than a quarter of the population prefers Naver, the first website with its own search engine, created by Naver Corporation.
In August 2000, Naver introduced the “all-round search” service. This allows you to get a variety of search results on one page, divided by type: blogs, websites, images, cafes, and so on. Five years before Google launched a similar “universal search” feature.
Over the years, Naver has expanded its capabilities and now offers everything from email and news to the innovative online Q&A platform Knowledge iN. It is a true Korean marvel in the world of web development.
7. Cocoa
Kakao (or Daum Kakao) is a South Korean IT company founded in 2010.
Basically, all of its services and products are intended for use within South Korea and are not available outside of it.
The most popular messenger in South Korea.
Kakao has enough services, from music to photo stocks. But the most popular is the KakaoTalk messenger, used by 93% of smartphone owners in South Korea.
Kakao has also developed many innovative services and AI models, such as Karlo, KoGPT, and RQ-Transformer, and publishes manga, comics, and manhwa in separate apps under the Kakao Corp brand.
8. Hyundai
Hyundai Company (not a Hyundai, make no mistake) in our country is known primarily for its automobile segment. However, Hyundai Motor Company is only one of the divisions of the Korean conglomerate.
The main types of Hyundai cars are:
▪️ shipbuilding
▪️ automotive industry
▪️ construction
▪️ retail
▪️ finance
▪️ electronics

The company produces TVs, monitors, smartphones, tablets, audio and video systems, and other equipment. Unfortunately, most of these products are not available on the market in our country.
But with cars it is even more interesting. The company places great emphasis on hybrids and electric cars.

For example, this beauty is called the Hyundai Ioniq5 and you’ve probably never heard of it. No wonder, because in addition to South Korea itself, this electric car was only supplied to 7 states in America in 2018.
9. Samsung
South Korea’s largest technology company, Samsung, is a market leader in almost every industry and has become a symbol of its country.
The company’s history began in 1938 with the sale of noodles and seafood. Today, Samsung is one of the most recognizable global brands. The first phone company was introduced in 1998, and in 2019, it opened a new category of mobile devices, the Galaxy Fold line.
The first Samsung phone, model SH-100.
In addition to smartphones, Samsung produces a wide range of products: TVs, computers, home appliances – refrigerators, washing machines and much more. Quality, innovative features and stylish design – this is what distinguishes Samsung products.
10. Vunyo
In conclusion of today’s story, I want to share information about an unusual medical startup from Korea – Vuno.
Vuno Med-DeepCARS is the world’s first artificial intelligence-based medical cardiac arrest risk management system. It analyzes four vital signs: blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and body temperature, and predicts the risk of cardiac arrest based on these data.
This system was especially relevant during the acute period of the COVID-19 pandemic. It allows RAST to assess the condition of patients and predict the likelihood of cardiac arrest within the next 24 hours, even if hospital resources were overloaded.
We rarely think about it, but I would like the world to have as many advanced technologies in the field of medicine as possible.
The world of technology is beautiful in its diversity
I hope you found this interesting. Today, for the first time, we looked at the world of technology and brands from a geographical perspective.
As per tradition, I ask you, dear readers, to actively add to the list of brands that I might have missed. Don’t forget that the main ideas invented in Korea are Buldak noodles and a K-pop group with charming members.
Have a nice day!
