Exercise and diet are important factors in losing weight, but a team of scientists from the University of California, San Francisco, USA, has discovered a way to turn ordinary white fat cells into beige fat cells.

Most mammals, including humans, have three types of fat cells: white, tan (brown), and beige. The first type stores calories to produce energy, the second burns energy to produce heat, and the third type combines both tasks.

By switching from white fat to beige fat, our body will be able to effectively burn fat cells naturally without external help. This discovery is based on experiments on mice, but could still lead to the development of a new class of weight loss drugs.

A new study found that normal white fat cells can turn beige if production of the protein KLF-15 is limited. This protein appears to be much less prevalent in white fat cells than in brown or beige ones.

Using cultured human fat cells, scientists also found that the protein controls the amount of the Adrb1 receptor, which helps maintain natural energy balance.
