The group’s report shows that Amazon relies heavily on renewable energy credits (RECs), 68% of which are unconnected, meaning they do not contribute to the creation of new renewable energy infrastructure.

The company emphasizes that RECs mostly come from regions like Canada or Arizona, rather than the local grids that power its data centers. Critics say this means Amazon’s energy consumption is offset by existing renewables rather than encouraging new renewable energy projects. It also doesn’t take into account the timing of energy use: data centers are constantly running, and the availability of renewable energy fluctuates.

The group is calling on Amazon to adopt Google’s approach, which uses carbon-free energy 24/7 across every network it operates, enabling “real, sustainable energy use.”
