Delhi was found to have the highest ‘dust emission’ airport, with an average of 6.6 grams of dust per arrival during pre-monsoon flights. This is followed by Dubai and Niamey, each with an average of 4.3-4.7 grams per arrival.

Ingesting dust can cause glassy deposits or mineral scale to form inside engines. These deposits disrupt airflow, overheat engines and accelerate wear.

Lead author of the study, Claire Ryder, emphasised that although individual flights release relatively small amounts of dust into the air, the cumulative effect of multiple flights can be significant.
