In the future, the scope of card operations may be expanded. Diplomats suggest that the innovation will increase the number of Russian tourists in Myanmar and ensure their “comfortable stay” in the country.

Myanmar has become the 13th country where the Mir payment system operates in addition to Russia. You can also pay by card in Azerbaijan, Abkhazia, Belarus, South Ossetia, Venezuela, Cuba, etc.

  • In February 2024, the United States imposed sanctions against the operator of the Mir payment system, the National Payment Card System (NSCP). Almost immediately, NSPK apps disappeared from the App Store, and a month later they were removed from Google Pay.
  • Due to the sanctions, several neighbouring banks have stopped providing Mir card services. Since 30 March, most banks in Armenia have stopped using them, and since 5 April, similar measures have been in effect in Kyrgyzstan.
