Apple, Anthropic, Nvidia, and Salesforce used 170,000 YouTube videos to train their AI models without Google’s permission, according to an investigation by Proof News and Wired.
Tech companies have been training AI using video, without using images or sound. Channels include MrBeast, MKBHD, ABC News, BBC, The New York Times, The Verge, and Vox.
The company used a collection called Pile, which is owned by a nonprofit called EleutherAI. It didn’t get permission to use YouTube videos to collect data, but did so anyway.
Apple used Pile to train Apple Intelligence and the OpenELM model, which was released in April of this year.
