According to Owen Ensor, CEO and co-founder of Meatly, the UK has more flexible regulatory rules than the EU, making it easier to obtain permission to produce such a product.
The startup plans to launch commercial production of its food samples starting in 2025. The company plans to scale up its business and reach industrial volumes in the next three years.
Cultured meat, unlike its plant-based vegetarian counterparts, is made from animal cells grown in a lab. In the UK, it is currently banned from producing food from this type of meat for humans.
However, in the USA, Israel and Singapore, human consumption of this product is permitted.
According to the agency, it will be difficult to obtain permission in EU countries. Most likely, manufacturers of innovative products will start to look closely at the markets of Asia and the United States, the authors of the publication note.
