Earlier this week, the FBI announced that it had gained access to the locked smartphone of Donald Trump shooter Thomas Crooks. But until now, it was not known how it was done or which smartphone the shooter was able to use.
According to Bloomberg, Crooks used “a new Samsung model running Android.” The exact model was not disclosed.
The FBI first sent the smartphone to its lab in Virginia. On Sunday, the bureau’s employees tried to unlock the smartphone with the help of the Israeli company Cellebrite, brute-forcing passwords, but this attempt was unsuccessful.
The FBI then contacted Cellebrite directly for help unlocking the device. Cellebrite provided the FBI with access to “additional technical support and new software that was still in development.” The Samsung was unlocked for 40 minutes on Tuesday. [9to5Mac]
