On July 12, Roskomnadzor blocked access to Fikbook, stating that the platform would not remove materials containing LGBT propaganda (“the international LGBT movement” is recognized as extremist in Russia and is banned).
In this regard, the site administrators decided to hide some pages for readers and authors from the Russian Federation, according to the Fikbook Telegram channel.
The founder of the project under the pseudonym Entrery stressed that the place remained an island of freedom for fifteen years. He also said that he was “incredibly proud” of each author “who was brave enough to publish their stories despite the fear of new things, of criticism or of the unknown.”
“Despite all this, we must understand that the country where we work has its own characteristics. There are laws, and even if we do not agree with them, we must comply with them, because those who created them gave every opportunity to suspend our work, as we are all convinced,” the message says.
Thus, the platform will limit slash and fenslash content for users from the Russian Federation. At the same time, authors will retain access to their work, reviews and likes on content that is not illegal.
In early June, to avoid being blocked, the foreign language learning service Duolingo had to remove some content.
