Researchers from Moscow State University. MV Lomonosov have found a way to distinguish between white dwarfs and neutron stars, solving a major problem in astrophysics. White dwarfs are stars that no longer produce energy through thermonuclear reactions, but glow only from residual heat. Now scientists have discovered signatures that will help distinguish white dwarfs from neutron stars, especially those that are part of binary systems and shine brightly in the X-ray range.

Until now, it has been very difficult to distinguish between these two types of stars because they are so similar. The new technique detects differences in the spectral indices of these objects. White dwarfs have cool surfaces and absorb X-rays, while hot neutron stars reflect them away from the accretion disk.

This method simplifies the task of figuring out the nature of such compact objects when their origins are unknown or controversial. Astronomers can now use high-precision orbiting telescopes to easily determine what type of object they are dealing with, thanks to these differences in surface temperatures.
