The Ministry of Industry and Trade announced that they will start production of housings and crystals for LEDs in Russia. The project is currently at the approval stage of the Electronic Industry Development Council. The ministry has not yet announced any details about the project.

Currently, only a few companies in Russia can produce LEDs, such as the Mikron plant in Zelenograd and the Kaliningrad GS Group. Vedomosti sources claim that the Ministry of Industry and Trade is negotiating with these companies to start producing LEDs, but no final decision has been made yet. GS Group and the Armavir company Rusid are also interested in crystal packaging, but there is no mass production of LEDs in Russia yet.

There are LED manufacturers in Russia that specialize in small-scale production, for example, Proton JSC. But mass production of LEDs requires the establishment of production of gallium nitride crystals, which will require large investments and time. Full-fledged production is expected to appear no earlier than in a few years and will require investments of several billion rubles. If successful, this could increase the price of the final devices. The situation with the start of production has become urgent due to the change in the points system of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, which will exclude Russian LEDs and lamps from state procurement if they are not considered domestic from 2025.
