In Russia, a unique facility for the production of preforms for fiber optic cables is planned to be put into operation, the first such enterprise in the country. The new facility will be built by OVS Quartz LLC, which in fact belongs to Optical Fiber Systems (OVS), a major fiber optic manufacturer. It is not yet known exactly where the new construction will be located and what its budget will be.
There are currently no factories in Russia that produce preforms – special components for optical fiber. They are purchased from China and India. The new plant is expected to be operational by 2027. Construction investments may range from 10 to 20 billion rubles, but the exact estimate is still unknown.
The construction of the facility will be a significant step for Russia, but the fiber optic market here is significantly smaller than the global market, and the cost of production can be higher than that of an imported analogue. Currently, Russian optical fiber is comparable in quality to foreign fiber, but its price is more expensive. Cables made of Russian fiber optics are more often purchased for government programs, such as the construction of the Trans-Eurasian communications line, while private operators tend to prefer cheaper foreign options.
