Google Chrome is preparing a shortcut to close tabs that are consuming a lot of computer resources. A new feature in the browser’s Canary version will detect tabs that may be negatively impacting performance and give you the option to suspend them.

The tool will work in two steps: The first of these is monitoring application performance. If any anomalies are detected (for example, too many processes or a tab consuming RAM memory), the program notifies the user with a pop-up window in the upper right corner.

The second section is a pop-up window that displays the problematic tabs. From there, buttons are displayed to close the tabs in question or to suspend them until they can be opened again by clicking the “Fix now” button.

Generally, function is a shortcut to suspend tabs already present in ChromeBut currently, tabs only automatically go to sleep after being forgotten for a while.

When tabs are deleted or suspended, Chrome displays the amount of memory saved by the process. Thus, the browser gives the user more control while also allowing navigation to remain fluid without requiring tabs to be closed.

Still under development

The tipster who discovered the news, @Leopeva64 on X (formerly Twitter), notes that Google developers are working on various versions of this feature, but the only difference is in the text displayed in the pop-up.

The leaker reports that the function is manually activated in the menu chrome://flags. The source is defined as: “#performance-intervention-user-interface“.

This functionality is only available in the latest version of Chrome Canary, build 128. For now, there’s no estimate on when the feature will be available to the general public.
