Scientists isolated compounds of the species zosteropenilin and pallidopenilin from the fungus Penicillium yezoense KMM 4679, which is found in the seaweed Zostera marina. The resulting compounds showed antitumor activity, especially at low concentrations, making them promising candidates for further research. One of the isolated compounds has already demonstrated the ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, the university said.

The structures of new substances were determined using modern spectroscopic methods. Scientists emphasize that marine fungi continue to be leaders in the number of new compounds isolated annually in scientific research.
