The process, detailed in a recent JACS Au publication, demonstrates the “successful integration of waste products into functional electronic devices” such as silicon-based hybrid solar cells and organic electrochemical transistors.

The team found that sulfonated polystyrene (specifically waste polystyrene foam) could produce PEDOT:PSS. After extensive testing, the scientists write that they achieved a high degree of polymer sulfonation and minimal defects using a mild sulfonating agent, creating “an environmentally friendly method for converting plastic waste into high-value electronic materials.”

The performance of the foam-derived PEDOT:PSS was comparable to commercially available options, highlighting the potential of this approach.
