Scientists found that the p16 protein protects cells from uncontrolled division, but loses this protection when it is dysfunctional. The study found that the change in the protein’s status can be reversed and restore its normal function.
According to lead researcher Dr. Christoph Göbl, the discovery opens up new hopes for creating more effective ways to diagnose and treat cancer. The study was carried out over four years with support from the Royal Society Marsden Fund and the Health Research Council of New Zealand.
