Ofcom has highlighted how TikTok provided incorrect information about the number of users using its parental controls feature. Despite later providing accurate data, the company admitted its mistake and apologised for any inconvenience caused.
As a result of the breach, Ofcom was forced to remove information about the effectiveness of TikTok’s parental controls from its annual transparency report. The regulator noted that TikTok had independently reported the error and taken measures to rectify the situation, which allowed it to reduce the fine.
However, Ofcom highlighted the importance of getting accurate information from regulated companies and the need to keep children safe online. The fine was imposed considering TikTok’s size and awareness of regulatory requirements.
