Launched aboard the space shuttle Columbia on July 23, 1999, Chandra has provided invaluable insights into the universe, from black holes to exploding stars. But NASA’s science division is facing a nearly billion-dollar budget deficit, forcing the agency to consider significant reductions in Chandra funding.

As part of broader cost cuts, the agency plans to reduce Chandra’s operating budget from $68.3 million in fiscal 2023 to $5.2 million by 2029.

Such a reduction would seriously impact the mission’s scientific productivity and could lead to mission closure.
