In a 2006 study, researchers gave rats a choice between saccharin-sweetened water and cocaine. 94% of the rodents preferred saccharin. And 100% of those addicted to cocaine chose saccharin.

But most likely our love of sweets is explained by an innate and universal preference for such a taste. This is especially true for children.

The amount of sugar in sweetened cereals dropped to 45.9 percent by weight in 1985. But more than 30 percent of breakfast cereals by weight are still sugar.

Many brands of sugary cereals contain 10 to 14 grams of “added sugar” per serving, and some have even more. Added sugars are empty calories. They’re added to the product simply to improve taste.

High-glycemic, simple-carb foods like sugary cereals can raise blood lipid levels, increase hunger, and release more insulin, all of which can increase your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

If you consume more than 13% of your total calories as sugar, it increases your chance of dying from cardiovascular disease by 39%. In contrast, scientists have linked low glycemic index diets to improvements in blood sugar, blood lipids, and weight loss.
