Apple has announced that it will open up access to the NFC chip using the Secure Element in the iPhone with the release of iOS 18.1.

The innovation will be available in Japan, Australia, Brazil, the UK, New Zealand, the UK and the US. It will be available in any external application, regardless of Apple Pay and Wallet.

Using the new NFC and SE (Secure Element) APIs, developers can offer in-app contactless payments for in-store payments, virtual car keys, corporate passes, student ID cards, house keys, hotel keys, loyalty and rewards cards, and event tickets. Government-backed identity will be established in the future.

Additionally, iOS 18.1 users can switch Wallet to another default app for paying in stores.

This is what it will look like

To enable the new API in their apps, developers will need to enter into a commercial agreement with Apple, request NFC and SE rights, and pay the associated fees. More details can be found on the company’s website.
