Every year more and more countries in the world begin to feel the effects of global warming, especially the melting of glaciers affecting coastal areas. So, in South Korea, the beaches of the city of Busan become more and more flooded with each city, because of this, local residents leave their homes in the coastal area and move to the city center. In 2019, to solve the problems of flooding and lack of space, a floating city project – “Oceanix Busan” – was developed.
The city on water project was developed by Oceanix, and the Korean authorities, together with the UN, accepted it for implementation. As conceived by the architects, the city will initially consist of six hexagonal platforms in which 12,000 people will be able to live. But thanks to the structure of the platform, in the future that city can be expanded to accommodate hundreds of thousands of people.
The first six platforms will be divided into three areas: residential, research and entertainment. In the floating city, all buildings will have a maximum height of five stories. The city is planned to be as environmentally friendly as possible: energy will be produced using renewable sources, a waste processing system will be located on the underwater parts of the platforms, and local residents will travel by boats and bicycles.
Biorock material will be used for the construction of the platforms, which will eventually be covered with limestone and will not collapse under the influence of water. The buildings are planned to be constructed from wood and bamboo to be as light as possible. The platforms themselves will be anchored, thanks to which the locals will not feel the pitching even in strong waves.
The price of such a structure is more than 650 million dollars, they plan to develop the city through private investment. The cost of local housing is still unknown. The project is expected to be completed in a few years.
