As RBC writes, citing a study, for the whole of 2023, gamers downloaded unlicensed games worth 324 billion rubles. These indicators allowed us to conclude that the turnover of pirated games increased by 4%.

However, this year the dynamics have changed, XYZ notes. In the second quarter of the year, the cost of these games decreased by 39% compared to the first quarter, from 118 billion to 72 billion rubles.

The share of pirated gaming content has also declined. In April-June it fell to 38% from 74% in January-March.

At the same time, only 39% installed more than three unlicensed copies. A year earlier, the proportion was 73%.

As XYZ explained, pirated content is often in demand in countries with low purchasing power.

The decline in interest in pirated content is also due to the development of technology and a large number of online features in games, access to which requires a legal purchase.

“In addition, platform companies do not hesitate to block user accounts, and even the consoles themselves, at the first sign of the use of pirated content,” said Yasha Haddaji, former head of Nintendo’s representative office in Russia.
