A few days ago, Microsoft confirmed that it was planning to kill the Windows Control Panel and merge all the functionality into the Settings app. However, the company seems to have changed its plans and is now more confident about this change, leaving the future of the Panel open.
The information was first reported by the website. NeowinFound a support page warning about the demise of the Control Panel. However, this statement has been changed and it no longer says anything about the end of functionality, only that some functions will be moved to the Settings menu.
“Control Panel has been a feature of Windows for a long time. It provides a central location for viewing and changing system settings and controls. Through a series of apps, you can adjust a variety of options, from the system time and date to hardware settings, network settings, and more. Many of the settings in Control Panel are in the process of being moved to the Settings app, which offers a more modern and simplified experience,” Microsoft explains in its new statement.
Dying is hard
The previous message emphasized that the Control Panel would be deprecated in favor of a simpler, more modern approach. However, it is possible that even Microsoft does not believe in it that much, or that the public does not like it because the function has been around for decades and is loved by users.
It is worth remembering that Microsoft continues the note explaining that the Control Panel has not been completely moved to the Settings application “for compatibility reasons”. This could mean that completely eliminating the Panel is not so simple, since there may be parameters in the system that prevent a sudden change that does not affect Windows either.
Microsoft has been talking about doing away with the Control Panel since 2011, and with the recent unexpected change of direction, it’s expected that this functionality will remain in the operating system for a long time.
