The authors of the study analyzed data from more than 5,300 participants from 15 countries, including Latin America and the Caribbean. The researchers found a widening gap between the biological and chronological age of the brain, particularly in people with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Co-author Daniel Abasolo highlighted the impact of socioeconomic inequality and environmental factors on brain ageing, particularly in poor countries. The study also found significant gender differences, with women in these countries showing greater differences in brain age.
