Spotify claims the move could breach the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates interoperability between big tech companies and third-party services. Under Article 6(7) of the DMA, companies like Apple must provide equal access to hardware and software features, ensuring third-party services can operate with the same functionality as the company’s own services.
The changes only affect Spotify Connect on iOS, while other volume control methods like Bluetooth and AirPlay remain unaffected. Spotify’s attempt to access volume control technology similar to Apple Music was rejected by Apple, which reportedly required HomePod integration to use the technology.
