The Telegram messaging team has announced a contest to create a video player that can be integrated into the application starting in 2025. The collection of applications will last until October 25, the winners will be announced in November. The new player is expected to replace the current AVPlayer.

According to the conditions of the competition, the author of the best proposal will receive a remuneration of 50,000 dollars (approximately 4.7 million rubles). Developers from any country can submit their idea to the competition.
The main task of competitors is to create a media player that supports HLS streaming (both audio and video) for use primarily on iOS and, later, other operating systems.
The player must support automatic and manual switching between available video streams. And to play audio or video it is prohibited to use the web interface (only a hybrid format with Java is allowed).
According to Hi-Tech Mail experts who paid attention to the competition, this initiative may signify Telegram’s desire to become a full-fledged video hosting service and compete with YouTube.
