Social network X competitor Bluesky reports “record levels of activity” from users in Brazil as Elon Musk’s platform is blocked in the country. The app took the top spot in the Brazilian App Store’s ranking of free services, beating out Threads.

“Brazil, you are setting new activity records on Bluesky,” says the official Bluesky account on its own platform.

On Saturday, the company reported 500,000 new users in the past two days, and on Sunday the three-day figure surpassed 1 million new accounts.

Bluesky CEO Jay Graber used his account to praise the Brazilians for making the “right decision.”

This week, Brazil’s Supreme Court ruled to block X from the country for failing to comply with the requirement to appoint a legal representative for the company in the country. In addition, Brazil imposes fines of $8.9 thousand for using the platform through a VPN.

In mid-August X, Elon Musk decided to close the office in Brazil due to pressure from the Supreme Court for failure to comply with content requirements. Company representatives described the demands as direct censorship and a violation of freedom of expression.

Bluesky is a decentralized Twitter project introduced in 2019 with a similar interface. In 2021, the platform became independent and in 2023 the invitation-only Bluesky app was launched.

In February 2024, the social network became available to all users. According to the company itself, Bluesky had 6 million accounts in May of this year.
