In the next five years, India will become one of the top 10 most popular tourist destinations in the world. This prediction was shared by the country’s Minister of Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

“We will surpass the global average [доли туризма в ВВП страны] over the next five years,” Shekhawat said at the World Leaders Forum organised by The Economic Times.
The Tourism Minister clarified that tourism’s contribution to the world economy is 10.4%. Currently, the tourism industry’s share in the Indian economy is 7.9%. According to the politician, in the next five years this figure will exceed 10% and, consequently, the world average.
According to the World Economic Forum’s 2024 index, India ranks 39th out of 119 tourist destinations.
Shekhawat recalled that in 2047 India will celebrate the centenary of its independence from Great Britain and tourism will be one of the main areas of interest.
“The world is looking at India with a new sense of curiosity,” said the head of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and “searches for Indian cuisine, cultural diversity and tourism opportunities” have grown by 48% since 2019.
